And justice for all

History has been created. It is unprecedented and unparallel in Pakistan’s sordid history that a three-time prime minister and holder of public office for more than three decades stands finally convicted for corruption. Nawaz Sharif now joins the select club of world leaders who have been prosecuted for massive graft.

Let’s salute the benign nature, which has taken the retribution of the 200 million hapless Pakistanis from the most powerful person. The credit goes to the PTI for launching this crusade against the systemic corruption in the country. It is a moment of victory for the people of Pakistan.

The 2018 elections are over. Whatever happens on July 25 is a mere formality. Imran Khan has not only successfully bulldozed his main opposition for the coming term, but he has also ensured a safe berth for the next term. Another man who can heave a sigh of relief is Musharraf. He can now return to his luxurious farmhouse and enjoy his remaining life comfortably. The nation embarks on an experiment that hasn’t been tried before. Only time would prove the long-term effects of these decisions on the political horizon of Pakistan.

Such court decisions are always welcome provided they are free of doubts. All corrupt politicians must be evenly handled otherwise political unrest will jeopardise our peace and stability. The constitution must be implemented in its entirety as it encompasses all sorts of corruption and we shouldn’t restrict ourselves to financial corruption only. It would have been a monumental achievement had all corrupt elements – with no exceptions – been taken to task before the general elections. This would have led to the emergence of a real and honest leadership. For now, we can only hope that our tomorrow is safe and we are finally on the road to progress.
