Advancing innovation: Jang Media Group, only Pakistani media company recognized at Google I/O 2017

CALIFORNIA: Mobile phone apps took center stage at the recently concluded Google’s annual developer conference as the search giant announced new features for its digital assistant and its popular photo app while devoting little time to the Android mobile operating system.

Although the tech giant shifted its focus towards assistant and AI, web services, AMP and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) remained the major focus among the developers as the company included major publishing partners from across the globe including the Jang Media Group, a first for any Pakistani Media Company to have achieved this global recognition.

In a keynote session ‘The Modern Mobile Web: State of the Union’, Rahul Roy-chowdhury VP Product Management, said in 2016 we shared that the AMP and PWAs were bringing new capabilities, better performance, and a streamlined workflow to the mobile web.

And today more than two billion AMP pages have been created and "PWA" has proved to be far more than a buzzword—it’s now the way that many businesses around the world are building for mobile devices, he told the audience.

Jang Media Group was in the enviable position in 2016, when Rahul shared a list of early Google partners and adopters who had launched a progressive web app.

Geo News, country’s largest news channel, was featured in that category along with the Washington Post.

The Jang Media Group has had the honour to be showcased two years in a row for their groundbreaking work and 2017 was no exception.

From an early adopter to being continually invested in innovating, the Jang Media Group made it to the list of technology companies being at the forefront of cutting edge technology ahead of many global publishers and brands. Jang Media Group was also featured in the Google Developers summit in 2016 in Amsterdam, where the underlying technical aspects were showcased in the largest developer-centric summit.

Given the market dynamics in Pakistan and in other emerging markets, with the average user being limited by space on their smartphones and patchy networks, the PWA bridges the gap of having up to date information with limited connectivity and being able to access information even in offline mode after an initial visit to the site.

In the Pakistani context, this makes sure that users get bandwidth optimised content, fast and efficiently with lower data charges at the core, driving affordable innovation for all Pakistanis and democratising access to information.
